At the opening of the event, Hualien Station Director, Mr. Luo Jiaxiang, mentioned that Hualien Station is not only responsible for providing shelter and meals but also carries the important mission of caring for the homeless. He shared that although the station's space is limited, every homeless person can feel the love and support from all parts of society. The Warm Winter Blind Box Project is aimed at bringing more warmth to those in need during the cold winter days.

During this event, the participating students and volunteers organized a large number of supplies, including dry rations, rice, cooking oil, salt, and essential items like moisture-proof mats. President Melody Fan donated 80 boxes of instant noodles, providing significant support to the event. Vice President Emma Cheng contributed 10 supply packages, while Marcella Wu assisted as an administrative volunteer, supporting the founder of the Hsinchu Love Volunteer Team in coordinating the Warm Winter activities for the three shelters of the Humanitarian Foundation.

Director Luo emphasized that moisture-proof mats are critically important for the homeless, as they often sleep on cold and damp floors. These mats help effectively block moisture from the ground, providing a layer of warmth. Especially in winter, such supplies are invaluable in helping them feel more cared for.

Whether it's food, daily necessities, or moisture-proof mats, each item is filled with love and makes them feel the support and care from all sectors of society.

Another highlight of the event was the distribution of supply packages, which contained various urgently needed daily necessities, all donated by kind-hearted individuals. Director Luo expressed gratitude to all donors for their support and emphasized that these supplies not only help the homeless but also assist the vulnerable groups at the station, improving their living conditions.

In addition, this event received support from the Hsinchu Love Volunteer Team and Tzu Chi, who helped raise ten laptops, which were successfully donated to students in need and other individuals. Director Luo revealed that some of the laptops would be kept at Hualien Station for public service use and to replenish supplies for future needs.

Homeless individuals, or those without stable shelter, face numerous challenges. According to reports by Do You a Flavor, they form a diverse demographic, with most aged between 50 and 70. Their paths to homelessness vary, often stemming from aging, illness, or injuries that prevent employment, as well as losing family or significant relationships, which leads to despair. Approximately 60% of homeless individuals aspire to work but find stable employment unattainable due to health or age constraints, leaving them reliant on low-income, short-term jobs. About 30% feel a deep sense of loss from losing loved ones or critical connections, some even battling suicidal thoughts but unable to act, turning instead to alcohol as an emotional escape. Meanwhile, 10% struggle with mental health conditions or disabilities.

To better understand the lives of the homeless, Hualien Station organized a special nighttime visit as part of this year’s Warm Winter Blind Box Project. Volunteers walked the streets at night, engaging with the homeless, listening to their stories, and identifying their needs. This approach not only brought the volunteers closer to the realities faced by homeless individuals but also supported the development of more targeted and practical aid strategies.

Through this night visit, the volunteers gained a profound understanding of the challenges and difficulties faced by the homeless, reinforcing their commitment to providing care and support. Hualien Station plans to continue promoting similar initiatives, aiming to raise public awareness about homelessness and collaborate to create a warmer, more supportive environment for those in need.
