Many African regions face extreme resource shortages, particularly basic clothing and footwear.
To improve the living conditions of vulnerable communities, Hsinchu Love Action joined hands with Yu Sheng Tang Bookstore to participate in the 'Old Shoes Save Lives 30' charity program, bringing warmth and hope to impoverished families in Africa.

In this initiative, Mr. Hsu Chung-Hao from Yu Sheng Tang Bookstore generously donated 2,000 brand-new T-shirts to support Africa's underprivileged communities. Meanwhile, the Hsinchu Love Action Team launched a fundraising campaign to cover the significant logistics costs, ensuring that these valuable supplies reach the families in need in Africa. This collaboration not only showcases the compassion of the Hsinchu community but also highlights the importance of sharing resources.

The success of this event relied heavily on the selfless dedication of volunteers, especially Quinton and Catherine, whose enthusiastic participation and hard work were deeply appreciated. Quinton shared, "Joining the clothing donation event for Africa is a meaningful way to help families in need by providing essential clothing. It is also an opportunity to give back to society and reflect on the privileges we often take for granted."

This act of love transcending borders not only brought warmth to Africa's impoverished communities but also raised awareness about supporting vulnerable groups. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their support and contributions. Let us work together to continue bringing hope and change to those in need. Together, we can make a difference and prove that love knows no boundaries!

With the rise of fast fashion, the speed of clothing replacement has also increased, and with it comes the question: Where do discarded clothes go? According to an analysis by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in 2023, EU textile waste exports have doubled over the past 20 years, reaching 1.7 million tons in 2019. Of this, 46% is sent to Africa, and 41% is sent to Asia. Some second-hand clothes are resold, some are downgraded to industrial rags or padding, and some end up in open landfills or are discarded carelessly.
To address this issue, the EU Environmental Council held a meeting on the 25th, where France, Denmark, and Sweden jointly proposed a plan to regulate the export and import of second-hand clothes under the Basel Convention, requiring that prior consent be obtained from the importing country before export. The Basel Convention is a UN-led international treaty aimed at controlling the transboundary movement of hazardous waste, especially from developed countries to developing nations.

The French Ministry of Environment pointed out that "Africa should not become the dumping ground for fast fashion." According to a report by Reuters, Denmark’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU, Soren Jacobsen, emphasized during the meeting that the export of textile waste threatens the environment, society, and health of developing countries, and the EU should put an end to this practice. The French representative also mentioned that this ban would help improve the EU's own textile recycling system, reduce unnecessary waste exports, and decrease the environmental impact globally.
