Restoring Computers, Spreading Love

On July 1st (Tuesday), six students—Angie Lo,Melody Fan, Lucas Chen, Quinton Tsai, James Tsao, and Christine Tsao—participated in an afternoon internship from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Tzu Chi Computer Recycling Center in Hsinchu. They personally repaired and assembled second-hand computers, which were later donated to individuals in need.

Hands-On Learning: Understanding the Value of Computer Renewal

During the volunteer service, students actively took part in several stages of the computer renewal process, including:

Testing computer monitors to ensure they function properly, including checking for clear and stable display output.

Sorting monitors into functioning and non-functioning categories to help the center manage repairs and recycling more efficiently.

Wiping and cleaning equipment surfaces to ensure parts are tidy and ready for reuse.

Helping move computer equipment to designated areas, gaining exposure to basic logistics and storage concepts.

Through hands-on participation, students not only learned how to identify and test basic monitor functions, but also gained a deeper understanding of the value of equipment renewal—and how every small, unnoticed task quietly contributes to meaningful change in the world.

Understanding the Origins: Connecting Technology and Public Good

In addition to hands-on experience, the students interviewed staff at the center to learn about the background and operations of the Tzu Chi Computer Recycling Center.

A center representative shared that the computer recycling program was originally launched to address the digital divide during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, many underprivileged families faced the challenge of having online classes but no computers to access them. In response, Tzu Chi began calling for secondhand computer donations and organized volunteers to refurbish and distribute the devices to students and schools in need.

This initiative combines environmental protection, education, digital equity, and charitable service—giving new life to idle computers and turning technology into a true tool for helping others.
